Internet Novices

At internet novices, you will learn the basics of surfing the net, definitions of common terms, internet myths and finally, how to protect your computer from viruses.

Before you scroll down, you may have noticed on this and other websites, words in paragraphs that are light blue or violet in color and have a line running underneath them. These are called Text Links. When you run your cursor over them, you will notice it changes from a pointer to a hand with the index finger pointing as if it was going to press a button.

The cursor will also do this when you run it over ads and some images. Whenever it does this, it means that if you left click your mouse you will link to a new page or site. Depending on how the link is programed, it will either replace the page you are on, or it will open up a new window or tab to display the new page.

At ETA, if the link is to another page at our site, it will open and replace the page you are on. If the link is an outgoing one to another site or service, then a new window or tab will be opened for that link. That way ETA will stay open in your browser so you can flip back and forth. If you wish to open one of ETA's page links in a new window or tab, place your cursor over the text link. When the cursor changes to a hand, click the right side button on your mouse. This will display a drop down menu. In the menu select either;

Yahoo! Personals Canada

-Open link in new window or,

-Open link in new tab.

On some of our pages you will see ads posted by Google. These are ads that are placed on participating sites & the people or companies posting the ads, pay a fee
to Google to have their ads posted on sites that are relevant to the product or service they are advertising. You will normally find 3 or 4 ads along side each other in a group. The ads are normally 2 short lines of text with a web address under them.

The cost is inccured every time the ad is clicked and opened. Although we do subscribe to Google Adsense, we do not guarantee the validity of any ads as they are constantly changing. That does not mean they are false and if an ad interests you then by all means click on it and check it out. If it's a product or service you think is questionable and would like further advice then Contact us.

Common Terms

The Internet has it's own language. Like learning any new skill, it is useful to expose yourself to the common terms used. The best place for Internet novices to find an answer for any common term is Net Lingo. Here you will literally find every term known from A thru Z. This link will open up to the top 50 Commonly Used Terms and if what you are looking for is not there then just click on whatever letter of the alphabet the term begins with. If after searching you still can not find what you are looking for Contact us.

How To Surf The Net.When it comes to surfing the net, chances are if you found your way here, then you are already getting a good handle on what you need to do to move from Internet novice to Internet Pro. However if you feel you are still quite green and want an easy to follow guide to the basics, then check out this site.

The Integrating Technology Into The Mathematics Curriculum website was created by Gavin Parker, with the assistance of Michael Strahan and Orlando Williams. It is largely based on the work of Jan Noble and Michael Strahan, who have developed a website which outlines in detail how to effectively use computers in the primary school.

This page I think is great for any Internet novice as the information is laid out in a manner that is very simplistic. If you still feel intimidated by your computer and the net, then you may want to invest in some software to help you learn faster. We highly recommend you check out Video Professor. Their software gets high marks with us. You can quickly learn to use Programs like Excel & Microsoft Word. Within a few lessons an Internet Novice can effectively surf the Internet like a Pro or learn how to buy and sell on The great thing about the software is that the lesson opens in a smaller window and allows you to follow along in whatever program you are learning. It's simple, fast & effective.

If you are looking at starting any kind of business, you should always invest in proper tools to help you do more, faster! Remember as well, software to help run your business is also a Business Expense and a portion can be deducted from your taxes.

Internet Myths

As Internet novice, you no doubt by now have received a variety of emails, usually from well meaning friends, warning of monster viruses, missing children pleas, strange unusual photos. The list goes on. There is a lot of great information and opportunity on the Internet, but there is also lots of garbage as well. Current Netlore. is the best place to confirm or deny the authenticity of whatever item you are suspicious of.

Creator David Emery is a freelance writer and an avid chronicler of urban legends and popular culture, with a special interest in the lore and folklife of the Internet.

"On this site we'll investigate, debunk, and, wherever possible, simply appreciate the strangest, scariest, funniest, most popular tall tales, rumors, and hoaxes people see fit to share, both online and off. I'm pleased to have you join me in what promises to be a constantly entertaining, ever-enlightening exploration of the urban legends and folklore of the digital age."- David Emery.

One 'tall tale' that is not a myth, is that anyone can make money on the Internet. Why? Because it is true. As you continue exploring ETA you will not only learn how to do it, you will also see that it is not as hard as you think and that even someone who considers themselves an Internet Novice can create an Internet business or market their existing business online.

The video below is done by Elad. He is the creator, of coolest-kid-birthday-parties.com. Elad uses humor to show the attitude of people who still believe it is a myth to make money through the Internet.

Check out Elad's web site for great birthday party ideas.

Virus Protection

I will make this short and sweet. Whether you are an Internet Novice or a pro, unless you own an Apple computer, you need virus protection. This is one item that you do not want to be short sighted on. You get what you pay for! That's why the free virus protection that comes with some providers, is well,......terrible. As most techies will tell you, 'it's free for a reason.

Symantec
Make it a safe 2008. Shop our Norton "Home & Home Office Store."

Symantec is a world leader in virus protection. Don't leave yourself vulnerable, especially if you are considering starting any kind of an Internet business.

If your PC or laptop has seen better days and you want to look at updating to a better unit, you may want to consider purchasing an Apple. The advantage is a better operating system that is immune to viruses. There are some slight differences in terminologies and positioning of command buttons on the browser and other programs, (ie: the close command X button is on the top left as opposed to the top right.).

Whether its a MacBook Pro laptop or a IMac desktop, the quality is undeniable. They earn a top recommendation by ETA.
