Why is understanding your mind important? Whether you are old or young, rich or poor, male or female of any race or color, you are all walking around with a super computer on top of your shoulders. Even while reading this page your mind is making trillions of computations both consciously and subconsciously. The key to self development and success is learning about your mind, as well as growing, enhancing and training it to see past circumstance and appearance and help you map a course to success.
"If you misunderstand your mind, you are an ordinary mortal; if you understand your mind, you are a sage. In this it makes no difference whether you are a male or female, old or young, smart or simple." -Jakushitsu
Your mind, for sake of simplicity lives within your brain which essentially is a super computer. It controls and monitors your body 24/7. Most of the time it does this on auto pilot. Breathing, blinking, growing hair, processing food and getting rid of waste all go on without requiring you to think about them. Now add the ability to learn, process and store vast amounts of information without interfering with these other functions.
The first step in understanding your mind, is to realize that you are not controlled by your mind. The mind works hand in hand with your spirit. Your spirit controls your emotions which drives the power of your mind.
Consider the following example. You want to lose some weight and get into better shape. Your mind is filled with information about exercise and proper nutrition and why they are good for you. It knows if you apply them over time you will develop a great physique and have better health. Your mind is also filled with tons of information about why your current habits and diet are keeping you overweight.
So why then does the mind not just take control over your body and make the necessary repairs? If the mind controlled you it would make the most logical decisions based on facts. It knows if you mistreat your body then you are harming the vessel which transports it around and keeps it alive. Simply out of self preservation alone it would make the body exercise more and eat right. It doesn't because it is how you feel about the information your mind is storing that determines your actions.
Do you feel bad about your appearance? Do you look at changing your eating habits as laborious and exercise as evil? If you approach any kind of change with this negative attitude then your mind will correspond with your emotions and will allow you to turn on the tv and eat junk while watching other people live their lives. Your mind will ignore the good information and only give you the negative answers you want because you are asking negative questions? Why don't I have a relationship? Why can't I lose weight? Why can't I change my eating habits? Your mind will answer any question posed to it and the answer will be straight forward and it will not try and motivate you. It is in a sense a computer.
You continue on in a negative manner, your self esteem suffers more, your stress level goes up, you are sick more often because your body isn't being maintained and is starting to become too tired to ward off virus's etc. The muscles and the brain start to atrophy from lack of use.
Yet if you change your emotions, if you realize that you are 100% responsible for yourself, your appearance and your circumstances then you can go completely in the other direction. You can set a goal and make a plan, you become inspired and see the end result in your mind and focus on it's outcome while at the same time you remain grateful for being who you are right now. Then you will move towards your goal in a positive way which will help you become stronger in your commitment. The work may be hard initially, however you soon realize that it's gets a little easier everyday. Then within an appropriate amount of time you see the results happening and that drives you even more. You are happier, healthier and your body starts to do the what it was designed to do, heal itself, ward off disease and fight infections. Your stress level reduces, you have more energy and you increase your life both in quality and in years.
"The only limitation in your life is the limitation of your own thinking." -James A. Ray
Once you start understanding your mind and how it works, now start asking it proper questions. How are your emotions effecting your ability to think and act? Are they holding you back from living the life YOU desire?
How many people have amazing talents that never get exposed to others because they fear ridicule, rejection and even success. Are you one of them? What's holding you back from exploring your talents and skills and being a success in the manner you see for yourself? What would happen if you took a risk or made some changes? More importantly who are you cheating if you don't make the changes?
No one in the world, in the universe, cares about the level of success you achieve except you! So knowing that, why not stop caring about what others think and just start taking some personal action. Start understanding your mind and you can overcome anything in life! No one is discounting bad things that may have happened to you, but at some point you need to realize that you can either carry the bads things around like luggage and allow them to affect your life and decisions or you can resolve to change and leave them behind. Anyone can change, all that is required is the desire and the will to do it.
"I keep waiting for someone to pinch me and say 'Wake up, Paul, it's time for work - you're late again'. I feel like I'm on a rollercoaster - a white knuckle ride into the unknown. And I don't want to get off!"-Paul Potts
Before you watch the video below, if you have never seen it and do not know who Paul Potts is, he is the winner of Britain's got talent. This video brings most people to tears to see the raw talent this man has in his voice and how this talent was kept from others all his life because of fear and self doubt. He suffered the abuse of bullies as a child and spent his life feeling insignificant. He realized while growing up that he had one true friend and that was his voice. Singing was an escape and it allowed himself to be in his own little world. The vicious words of his tormentors were replaced by hauntingly beautiful lyrics and melodies that lifted his heart and spirit.
It was his love and passion for music and opera that would create a lifeline for Paul into adulthood and help him through many more periods of adversity. But it was also a gift that was destined to go largely undiscovered, due to a crushing lack of self-confidence that has dogged this hard working and humble man throughout his 36 years.
